Measuring the body before the bike

Anthropometry and dynamometry, integrated.

A position is fitted to a specific body, and a specific body has lengths, ranges and forces that are not the same on both sides. Measuring that before touching the bike is what separates a study from an adjustment: without those numbers, any asymmetry that shows up in the pedal stroke is read by eye.

Both are measured with protocol and with instruments, not with a tape measure and judgement. Anthropometry follows the ISAK standard, at Level 2 accreditation. Strength and range are measured with a VALD DynaMo Plus.

ISAK Level 2 anthropometry

  • Segment lengths per side: femur, tibia and foot. This is what explains why two riders with the same inseam need different saddle heights.
  • Bone breadths and girths: biacromial and bi-iliocristal widths drive handlebar and saddle choice.
  • Skinfolds to protocol: recorded as a sum, not converted into a body-fat percentage that would carry the equation's error.
  • Measured repeatability: the ISAK standard requires a technical error of measurement within limits, which is what makes two sessions months apart comparable.

Dynamometry · VALD DynaMo Plus

  • Isometric strength and range in one instrument: dynamometer and inclinometer combined, so force and mobility are recorded in the same test rather than across two sessions.
  • Over 400 test protocols with five interchangeable attachments, covering hip, knee, ankle, trunk and shoulder.
  • Asymmetry in numbers, not impressions: each side is measured separately and the difference calculated. A 12 % imbalance between legs is actionable; «your right looks stronger» is not.
  • Comparable over time: the same battery repeated after a block of work tells you whether the imbalance was corrected or merely compensated.

Externally anchored tests are prioritised over manually resisted ones: it is the configuration with the best documented reliability, and the only one that lets a measurement taken today be compared with one taken six months from now.

What this changes in practice: a strength difference between legs changes which adjustment is appropriate. If the right leg produces 15 % less, raising the saddle «until both legs reach evenly» fixes the appearance and worsens the problem. With the asymmetry measured, the decision is a different one: adjust per side, document the starting point and measure again afterwards.

What is a pre-purchase bike study?

An assessment done before you pay, to establish which size, geometry and configuration are most compatible with your body, discipline and goal — whether the bike is new or second-hand.

Does it just tell me a frame size?

No, and a letter on its own would not be much use: two bikes labelled the same size can feel entirely different. The study compares stack, reach, geometry and remaining adjustment range across the specific models you are considering, and flags the ones that would box you in.

What do I actually walk away with?

Yes, and the stakes are higher there: on the used market there are no exchanges or returns, and the supply is whatever appears rather than what suits you. With your coordinates you can judge a listing in minutes instead of deciding from a photo and the size in the ad.

What if the compatible bike is beyond my budget?

That is a common outcome and useful information in itself. Knowing your coordinates lets you look down the range deliberately: which lower-tier models reproduce the same position, how much adjustment range they keep, and which components would need changing. The alternative — buying what you can afford and hoping it fits — is what usually ends up costing more.

Does this replace a bike fit after buying?

They are related but different. The pre-purchase study decides which bike you fit on; the fit afterwards finishes adjusting that bike to you. The usual sequence is pre-purchase before paying and the fit once the bike is built.
